Marc Renard’s paintings unveil the movements of the painter in the digital era — linear, nervous gestures mechanically scraped on opalescent surfaces, concealed and then revealed by adhesive strips. Working with acrylic and mixed media on canvas, he explores resurgence: the moment when something reappears after being buried, transformed by time.

Layer upon layer, the surface is built, scraped, masked and unmasked, until the gesture itself becomes visible as a trace — a negative as much as a positive.

Each canvas records this process rather than concealing it: glazing, transfer and scraping techniques create a depth that keeps shifting as the eye moves across it. The result is less an image than the memory of a movement, caught between disappearance and reappearance.

Marc Renard was born in Brussels in 1963. He lives and works in Brussels. He is represented by Gallery Brachot, Durbuy; Gallery Richard, Paris; and Marc Minjauw Gallery, Brussels.

Artistic Approach

Marc Renard’s work revolves around the notion of resurgence — that moment when something reappears after being buried, transformed by time and natural processes. Through abstract painting, he seeks to capture these moments of transition, these intermediate states where form hesitates between disappearance and rebirth.

The Resurgence series explores these themes through layered compositions, where each layer of paint simultaneously reveals and conceals. Colors emerge and recede, creating ambiguous spaces that invite the viewer’s gaze to navigate between surface and depth.

With Recto Verso (Front and Back), he explores duality and multiple perspectives. These works question our perception of pictorial space and propose compositions that can be read in different ways, depending on the viewer’s angle of approach.

His practice is guided by a constant exploration of the materiality of painting and its evocative power. He works intuitively, allowing the accidents and unforeseen elements of the creative process to enrich the dialogue between intention and chance.

Technique

Marc Renard works primarily with acrylic and mixed media on canvas. His process involves layering multiple coats of paint, alternating between fluid applications and more gestural marks. He also uses scraping, glazing, and transfer techniques to create textures and depth effects.

Each work is the result of an extended dialogue with the surface, where decisions are made in response to the emerging qualities of the paint itself. This processual approach allows him to remain open to the unexpected possibilities that arise during creation.
